There’s a particular kind of holiday that doesn’t demand, doesn’t rush and certainly doesn’t require a to-do list, and for many women, especially later in life, cruising has become exactly that gentle, joyful escape.

Having taken a number of cruises over the years, I’ve come to treasure the ease of it all. From the moment you step onboard, life softens. Meals appear as if by magic — whether it’s a relaxed breakfast buffet, a lingering lunch or a beautifully prepared dinner. And if you feel peckish in between?

There’s always something delicious nearby. No planning, no washing up, no decisions — just the simple pleasure of being looked after.

What has struck me more recently, however, is the growing sisterhood at sea. Where cruises once leaned towards couples and families, today they are filled with women — and plenty of them. Groups of friends, colleagues, sisters, even multigenerational gatherings of mothers, daughters and grandmothers. In South Africa, women now make up over 70% of cruisers, surpassing global trends.

There’s something deeply comforting about travelling this way. The ship feels safe and contained, allowing you to move freely at any hour. Early morning walks on deck, late-night chats under the stars — it all unfolds without a hint of worry.

And then, of course, there’s the delight of dressing up. Evenings onboard are a celebration in themselves. You’ll spot women in elegant dresses, their nails perfectly polished, lashes long and fluttering, each one embracing the chance to feel just a little bit glamorous. It’s not about impressing anyone — it’s about enjoying the moment.

One of the most practical benefits, often overlooked, is the ability to plan ahead. Many women appreciate booking their cruise well in advance and paying it off gradually. It brings peace of mind, knowing exactly what the holiday will cost, with optional extras — from spa treatments to drinks packages — factored in from the start.

But perhaps what makes cruising so special is the time it creates — time to rest, to reconnect, to laugh until your sides ache. It’s a holiday where you are free from responsibility, surrounded by like-minded women, and gently reminded of the joy in simply doing nothing at all.

And in today’s busy world, that might just be the greatest luxury of all.
