Val du Charron: A revitalised winelands escape in Wellington
Val du Charron, meaning Valley of the Wagon Makers, takes its name from the French Huguenots who settled the area towards the end of the 17th century, bringing with them the crafts of wine- and wagon-making. The historic De Groenenbergh farm, now Val du Charron, was proclaimed in 1699.
WIN: Three couples can each win a two-night bed-and-breakfast stay in a four-star suite, valued at R7 000. Prizes are valid for six months from 15 January 2026, subject to availability.

Set in Wellington, just 72km from Cape Town, the estate enjoys sweeping views across the Bovlei Valley, framed by the Hawequa Mountains and the historic Bainskloof Pass. While the scenery remains timeless, Val du Charron has recently undergone a major transformation, returning with new energy, upgraded facilities and a refreshed design that elevates the entire winelands experience.
The refurbished four-star Guesthouse now offers 40 rooms, including new family-friendly options centred around a striking new pool with mountain views, a baja deck, cocktail seating, cuddle corners and a Boma Bar with outdoor seating and a firepit. Service shines, thanks to a welcoming team led by front-of-house favourite Evans.

The five-star Coach House, with three luxurious suites featuring spa baths, pools and private patios, remains unchanged, as does the exclusive two-bedroom Manor House with its own pool and sauna.
Val du Charron is also the endpoint for popular multi-day wine walks through indigenous fynbos, vineyards, orchards and olive groves. Guests enjoy guided walks, comfortable accommodation and behind-the-scenes access to winemakers and local characters.
Wine tastings take place in the cellar, where stories from the Valley of the Wagon Makers bring the wines to life. Smooth, characterful reds and whites are exported to markets including Germany and Canada.
Dining is a highlight. The revamped Grillroom offers a carnivore-friendly menu featuring South African classics, seafood and vegetarian dishes, all paired perfectly with estate wines. Pizza Vista provides relaxed Italian fare and a child-friendly splash pad.
With nearby attractions such as Bainskloof Pass, the James Sedgwick Distillery and Old Tannery Wellington, Val du Charron offers both polish and personality — ideal for celebration or pure relaxation.
