Packed houses, standing ovations and plenty of ABBA nostalgia are making MAMMA MIA! a feel-good theatre hit in Cape Town – and Johannesburg audiences are next.

There are some shows that leave you thinking about the production long after the curtain comes down. Then there are shows that leave you smiling, singing and wanting to share the experience with someone else.

MAMMA MIA! appears to be doing exactly that.

The hit musical opened at Artscape in Cape Town on 3 September, and audiences have responded enthusiastically to its combination of ABBA’s unforgettable music, romance, friendship, comedy and a cast bringing the beloved characters to life.

Produced by Showtime Management, MAMMA MIA! runs at Artscape until 11 October before transferring to the Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg from 16 October to 22 November 2026.

ABBA hits, Greek-island sunshine and a timeless story

At the centre of MAMMA MIA! is Donna Sheridan and her daughter Sophie, whose story unfolds against the backdrop of a fictional Greek island.

Sophie is preparing to get married and wants her father to walk her down the aisle. The problem? She doesn’t know who her father is.

After discovering three possible candidates in her mother’s old diary, Sophie secretly invites all three to the wedding.

The resulting chaos brings together old relationships, new possibilities, friendship and family – all accompanied by the music of ABBA.

Songs including Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, Super Trouper, The Winner Takes It All and Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! have helped make the musical a global favourite.

Its themes are just as important as its music. Love, friendship, family, second chances and finding your own path are ideas that continue to resonate with audiences across generations.

And that may explain why the show continues to attract both longtime ABBA fans and younger audiences discovering the music for themselves.

A musical for more than one generation

Part of the appeal of MAMMA MIA! is its ability to bring different generations together.

For those who grew up with ABBA, the show offers a generous dose of nostalgia. For younger theatre-goers, it is an introduction to some of the most recognisable songs in pop music.

The combination of comedy, romance and music also makes it a natural choice for groups of friends, couples, families and anyone looking for an entertaining night out.

From Cape Town to Johannesburg

Cape Town audiences still have until 11 October to catch MAMMA MIA! at Artscape.

Johannesburg audiences will then have their opportunity when the production opens at the Teatro at Montecasino on Friday 16 October, running until Sunday 22 November 2026.

The Johannesburg season means audiences can once again meet the colourful characters at the heart of the story – from Donna and Sophie to their friends, former loves and potential partners.

For Showtime Management, the South African production continues its run of major musicals featuring local talent.

And if the response in Cape Town is anything to go by, Johannesburg audiences can expect plenty of laughter, dancing, big voices and familiar songs.

Why MAMMA MIA! still works

There is something reassuringly uncomplicated about MAMMA MIA!.

The story is about friendship, family, love and the possibility of new beginnings. The setting is sunny and escapist, while the music is instantly recognisable.

Most importantly, the musical doesn’t take itself too seriously.

That combination of humour, romance and ABBA’s extraordinary songbook has helped MAMMA MIA! remain a favourite with musical-theatre audiences around the world.

As Broadway World’s Meagan Dill put it, the production sees “MAMMA MIA makes a triumphant return led by South Africa’s best.”

For anyone who needs an excuse to dress up, gather friends or family and spend an evening singing along to ABBA, this may be it.

Don’t miss the South African season

MAMMA MIA! is currently playing at Artscape in Cape Town until 11 October, before moving to Montecasino’s Teatro in Johannesburg from 16 October to 22 November 2026.
