Tokara’s Reserve Collection Syrah earns top honours at Intercontinental Wine Challenge 2023
Tokara is celebrating a remarkable win as their Reserve Collection Syrah was awarded the title of the best red wine overall at the inaugural Southern Hemisphere tasting of the Intercontinental Wine Challenge 2023. Additionally, Tokara’s Director’s Reserve White was honoured with a Gold medal.
Standing as the sole South African trophy recipient, the 2020 vintage of the Reserve Collection Syrah truly shone in a diverse lineup of exceptional wines from Argentina, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia.
This prestigious international competition hosts tastings across various continents to recognize the world’s finest wines. In addition to winning the best red wine trophy, South Africa secured four Double Gold medals, while Chile and Australia each earned two Double Golds.
The expressive Tokara Reserve Collection Stellenbosch Syrah 2020 is a stellar example of a single vineyard wine that beautifully combines the best attributes of the old and new world. It boasts a captivating nose featuring hints of purple fig, cigar box, salted licorice, and violet perfume, which continue onto a refined, silky palate with luscious dark fruit flavors and a pleasing chalky finish, complemented by a subtle touch of red pepper kernels.
Tokara’s flagship wine, the Director’s Reserve White 2021, is a classic Cape Bordeaux-style Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blend crafted from grapes grown on the Simonsberg’s highest slopes. This wine impresses with its clarity and depth, offering a delightful blend of passion-fruit and pink grapefruit, accented by notes of blackcurrant and freshly toasted brioche. It is full-bodied, rich, and maintains a zesty, persistent character.
The forward-thinking vision of owners GT and Anne-Marie Ferreira to produce world-class Tokara wines with a distinct South African identity and without compromise underpins the continuous success of this prestigious Stellenbosch estate.
